Simple Minds start to clean house of the last 20 years of musicGlorioski! It’s been difficult around lately here what with inclement weather impacting my job, and lunch hours sacrificed on the altar of 40 hours a week. Then there was that annoying identity theft issue, haircut appointments, etc.
And not only was I getting to work early and taking 15 minute lunches, but I was trying to shore up the hours I did work to reach the magic 40 and something had to give. Actually two things went by the wayside. Pre-work gym time and this blog. Until we have another snow/ice event, we should be good for some regular posting.When late last year it transpired that long time faves Simple Minds were releasing a I thought ‘that’s nice,” but even though “Cry,” “Neon Lights” and “Black + White 050505” have never troubled the LP format, I’m not going to spend three figures to gaze upon 180g colored vinyl editions of albums I already had on CD.
Life and money’s too short for that game, even for a band I love as much as Simple Minds. I noted the proper refocusing of the spotlight on these albums which saw the band trim its sails to the point where their latest album had them hitting #4 in the UK album charts. Canny fans knew that this didn’t happen out of thin air, and these albums admirably reveal the work the band did. It was called “Rejuvenation” and reconfigured the “Big Music” artwork into something actually Given that I only care about Simple Minds music that is not on CD if I’m going to buy records of theirs, I noted this and moved on.All of that changed recently with the announcement of “Rejuvenation: 2001-2014” in a BSOG with CDs and a DVD. For anyone who has not ridden the bus hard in the last 20 years, this is a no-brainer.
You should enjoy most of it. Only the “Lost Boys” quickie cover album is missable, and I still maintain that the band now own Siouxsie’s “Christine.” I appreciate how Simple Minds keep the goods affordable, generally speaking. I bought all of the DLX versions of the albums like “Graffiti Soul” or “Big Music” and if I paid over $30 from the band for those 2-3 disc versions checks I’d be shocked.
Yeah, “Big Music” box was only $26. The full monty LP/DLX CD/7″ bundle for “Walk Between Worlds” was only $34.
The all time best deal was the “X5” box of DLX RMs of albums 1-6! That was $25 then, but not now!Like.

The band had a head start:they'd already recorded and releasedand both(aka )and were demoed. (Allthese recordings were made during a 10 day rehearsal period at Rockfield Studios in January 1982). Just before the second leg of the,recorded a, during which theyexclusively premiered. As the second leg of the tour continued, andbecame new songs in the set-list. After the tour, and plans turned to the new album was first choice for producer but he was unavailable.Virgin also suggested Martin Rushnet. However the band had other ideas.

A lot of it was what they'd call pure shit, or not very good anyway, and there were some magic bits that maybe werenever captured on the album.' -. By the end of the Fife sessions, the band had assembled several demo tapes. These included the(later to become),(later to becomeand(which became).
They then relocated to Townhouse Studios in London to record the basic tracks. ' As always, the music came first, and there was something of beauty about it. It suggested that sort of lyric. And the fact that suchideas came up - things of light - rang a bell in me, that was the first sign.' -. It quickly became apparent that style wasn'tsuited to the album. Brought in a session drummer, to add extra power to the backing tracks.
Multiple takes of the same songs were recorded to multi-track. Then assembled thebest parts of each take for the master.
This would have profound consequences later when the DVD-Audio album was produced. Herbie Hancock was recording in the studio next door. Grabbing the opportunity, the band asked if he'dlike to play a solo on the album. Hence his synth solo during. The dates in the title of the album were added at the last moment: ' After an album obsessed by fear we'd made an album lookingto the future.'

The 'flaming heart' design was influenced particularlyby crosses found in France. ' We knew what we were doing when we used that cross. It created a lot of controversy and some people even got angry, but when a hard rockband puts devils and creatures from the depths of hell on its cover, no one blinks an eye. He felt that from what he was hearing and it influenced his work.' -. pressed in the UK had gold inner sleeves; for subsequent pressings, purple innersleeves were used. The purple of the album titles and inner sleeves (second pressings) was based on the colour of acardinal's habit.
Came up with the idea when the Pope visited Scotland (and, incidentally,used Simple Minds' sound system to address the Glasgow crowd). Gold and purple inner sleeves were also used in other countries except these included the lyrics, printedaround a simple cross. As this artwork is stylised and repeated for each country, it's assumed thiswas original design. In the UK, the lyrics wereomitted, leaving just a book logo. featured unique artwork. The booklet included new graphics and different pictures ofthe band, whilst the sleeve featured a compacted version of LP cover. The CD cover usedwhite instead of gold, giving it a cold, frosy appearance (it isn't known if this was intented ora mistake by the printers).
For the USA, A&M pressed up a special; this became known as the'purple splashed gold' version of the album. (It's actually transparent vinyl in whicha small amount of purple and gold colours have been added). A large number of these were 'gold stamped' and sentout as promotional issues. A cassette and CD were also available. All the A&M pressings featured the edited version of the title track (which isn't noted onthe sleeve).
The originalfeatured an extended version of the title track (which isn't indicated on the sleeve either) which became known asthe German 12' Remix. In Canada, Virgin pressed up a of the LP. Again,this was transparent vinyl with a small amount of yellow colouring added. of the album is highly prized by the collectors for its unique sleevewhich removed all the religious images. Like all Yugosalvian releases, it was delayed, not appearing until April 1983. ' That's why I called it a coffee-table album. Not to be nasty, but that's what it is: a coffee-table album.

The Super-Audio CD version of the album was sonically created from the stereo master and again added nothing special. However, for the DVD-Audio, Ronald Prent returned to the original multi-tracks to create a true 5:1 Surround Soundrecording.
Prent and discovered a host of unused takes and extrainstrumentation. So rather than recreate original arrangements, they decided toextended the songs and add the missing effects.
The take of isespecially interesting as it features the studio cues and banter. Unfortunately the multi-tracks andwere missing, so the original stereo versions of these songs were included. Also discovered were the sessions for, a choppy instrumental basedaround one of drum rhythms, but left unfinished (and relegated to B-side status onthe.
Amazingly they found a take with vocals, and so as a bonus, the newlydiscovered was added to the album as a bonus track. Everyone who loves New Gold Dream (81,82,83,84) should absolutely seek out this version of the album. ' I have the most beautiful memories of New Gold Dream. It was made in a time between Spring and Summer and everythingwe tried worked.

On New Gold Dream I introduced some Alabama Soul into the mix for the first and last time.,and I had a complete blast writing the music for the songs as instrumentals.never added lyrics or melodies until after the instrumentals were all basically written. (That'show you get great instrumentals like.)would show me the song ideas he had on cassette and at the keyboards then I wouldshow him my funky rock grooves on the drums and we would start jamming to create these great new grooves and rhythmic textures combiningarpeggiator, vintage drum machine with playing and my drumming. This was the core ofevery song on the album.

The addition of big bass lines andmagical guitar colorings to this new sound thatand I were creating sealed the deal on what was the creation of a unique newSimple Minds sound being created by a unique group of Simple Minds musicians. It turned out to be thecreative zenith of our career, then we both moved on in different directions never to create together again. Likewise the sound ofthe band and the albums they released would never capture that same creative energy.
